Unfinished vs. Pre-finished Hardwood Floors
Many of the hardwood floors we install are unfinished. With unfinished floors, we lay the hardwood and then stain and seal it on site. We can match the floor to existing woodwork or cabinets for the exact look you want. Pre-finished wood floors have advantages too. Prefinished hardwood floors are finished in a factory where the environment is controlled so the finish is of superb quality and very durable. Plus, with pre-finished planks, the species, color, grain, and finish are all predetermined so what you see is what you get – no surprises. And one more advantage to pre-finished hardwood floors is that they can be installed faster because once they are laid, they are ready to walk on – no waiting on staining and sealing. No matter which type of hardwood floor you choose, it will look great in your Lee’s Summit home.
What’s the Difference between Engineered and Solid Wood Floors?
We carry both engineered and solid wood floors at Harmon. How do they differ? Solid wood planks are exactly what their name implies – solid wood from top to bottom and end to end cut from one tree. Engineered wood planks are created by taking multiple layers of wood and stacking them in different directions then binding them together with pressure and heat. Then a hardwood veneer is glued on top for the look of a solid wood plank. So both types are solid wood on top. The advantage to engineered wood is that it is more stable than solid wood and won’t warp or twist along the natural grain lines. They are better for areas where moisture and humidity tend to be higher like lower levels. The depth of the veneer will vary, but many engineered planks have a deep enough veneer to be able to be refinished when necessary.
